UDECOTT North Starblazers’ unbeaten run came to an end following a two- wicket defeat at the hands of TECU Titans as the 2018 Courts Women’s T20 Grand Slam tournament continued on Saturday at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba.
It means that the Titans now sit on top of the table, courtesy an extra point they received following their washed out match against LCB Central Sharks in the first round of the competition. Starblazers are not far behind on 4 points however. Meanwhile and the National Cricket Centre, Couva, Trident Sports Phoenix were able to record their first victory against LCB Central Sharks who are yet to win a match in the competition.
At the BLCA, Starblazers were sent in to bat first and were dismissed for 126 in 19.3 overs thanks to a destructive spell by WI all-rounder Deandra Dottin who picked up four wickets for 23 runs, while her WI teammate, Shakera Selman grabbed 2/22. Rachel Vincent continued her fine form, getting 72 out of that total, smashing 10 fours and three sixes off just 51 deliveries. Natasha McLean contributed 23 off 26 balls while the Titans did not help themselves with 16 extras.
In reply, steady contributions from Sheneta Grimmond (24), Britney Cooper (21), Shania Abdool and Selman (16 n.o) easily saw the Titans home in 19 overs. Dottin was named Player of the match.
At NCC, some pretty ordinary bowling from the LCB Central Sharks saw Phoenix record a massive 10-wicket victory against them. Opting to bat first, LCB got to 132 thanks to Shemaine Campbell (38), Felicia Walters (25) and Akaze Thompson (26 n.o). However, their bowling let them down and consistent loose balls allowed Phoenix openers, Reniece Boyce and Kycia Knight, both of whom were struggling previously in the tournament, to ease home to victory without breaking a sweat.
Boyce (73 off 58 balls) and Knight (52 off 47 balls) brought the game home for Phoenix with 2.5 overs to spare.
