The two teams which started off the Courts Women’s T20 Grand Slam Franchise Tournament as underdogs, will meet in the playoff eliminator tonight from 7pm at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba, for a chance in the final.

LCB Contractors Central Sharks, who finished second on the points table, will meet Trident Sports Phoenix who finished third. The both teams played each other on Wednesday night, with the Sharks getting the better of Phoenix by seven wickets. Both teams got off to rough starts in the tournament, losing their first two matches. Sharks’ first match vs TECU Southern Titans was called off due to a wet outfield, and they proceeded to lose their next two matches. They rebounded however and won all three of their second round matches. Similarly, Phoenix lost their first two matches but rebounded to win their next three before going down to the Sharks on Wednesday night.

Over at the National Cricket Center (NCC), Couva, TECU Southern Titans defeated the defending champions, UDECOTT North Starblazers by 77 runs to knock them out of the competition, as they remained on 4 points and thus at the bottom of the four-team table.

At BLCA, Phoenix were inserted by Sharks skipper, Anisa Mohammed and went about building a decent total of 142 at the end of their 20 overs, despite a superb spell of bowling from Samantha Bissoon who picked up all four of the wickets to fall in the innings. However, steady, pivotal contributions from skipper Stacy Ann King (34), Rosalie Dolabaille (28) and Bajan, Kycia Knight (27) were enough to get them to what seemed like a defendable total.

In reply, Sharks started slowly, as openers Felicia Walters and Canadian Achini Perera struggled to get the ball away, but their patience paid off and despite losing Perera for 8 off 13 balls and Bissoon shortly after for 5, WI wicket-keeper batswoman, Shemaine Campbell paired up with Walters to provide the stability the Sharks desperately needed.

Walters top scored with 71, and was run out only in the final over while Campbell was 47 n.o when the winning run was struck by Akaze Thompson, with a ball to spare. The win put the Sharks on 7 points while Phoenix stayed on 6 from their three wins.

At NCC, Titans skipper, Britney Cooper smashed an unbeaten 92 to send the defending champions, Starblazers packing and out of the competition. Starblazers were the only team in a must win situation at the start of the 6th and final round and Titans ensured that their hopes of reaching the playoffs for a shot at defending their title would be no more.

Thanks to Cooper, Titans amassed a massive total of 191 for 5 at the end of their 20 overs. Cooper’s 92 came off of 59 balls, which was way out of the reach of the Lee-ann Kirby led Starblazers. Kirby herself would lead from the front, top scoring with a valiant 34, but she found no support and her side was eventually bowled out for 114 in 15.1 overs.

Kycia Knight had a vital knock of 68 as Trident Sports Phoenix earned a six-wicket victory over TECU Southern Titans at the National Cricket Centre, Balmain, Couva on Tuesday night, as the Courts T20 Grand Slam Tournament continued.

In the other game on Tuesday night, LCB Contractors Central Sharks recorded a 20-run win over 2017 champs UDECOTT North Starblazers, at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba.

Last evening, in the final set of games in the preliminary round, Southern Titans faced North Starblazers at Couva and Phoenix met Central Sharks at Couva.

The top team overall will move automatically to Saturday’s final at Tarouba, and the second and third-placed teams will face each other in an eliminator tomorrow, also at Tarouba, for a spot in the title match.

After five matches, Phoenix have a total of six points, with Southern Titans and Central Sharks on five points apiece, and North Starblazers at the bottom of the standings with four points.

In Tuesday’s contest at Couva, Phoenix, chasing a victory target of 160, reached 162 runs for four wickets in 18.5 overs.

Knight, opening the batting, struck 11 fours in her 46-ball knock. The Barbadian, who was named Player of the Match, got good support from Reniece Boyce, who made a 33-ball 34 (three fours and a six) and Rosalie Dolabaille with 20 off 19 balls.

Another Bajan, Shakera Selman, took two wickets for 36 runs for Southern Titans.

The Southern Titans, who were sent in to bat, posted 159/4 with veteran Bajan and West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin slamming an unbeaten 70, which was decorated with seven fours and three sixes off 36 balls.

Captain Britney Cooper made 21 and Shenelle Lord chipped in with 20. Karishma Ramharack, skipper Stacy Ann King and Allison Collins took a wicket apiece for Phoenix.

At Tarouba, Central Sharks, who were offered first strike, scored 142/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Samanta Bissoon had a top score of 65 (57 balls, 11 fours), with other useful knocks from Chinelle Henry (31 not out off 17 balls with four fours) and Akaze Thompson (25 from 31 balls with two fours). Lee Ann Kirby was the leading wicket-taker for North Starblazers with 2/15.

Bissoon, who copped the Player of the Match award, returned figures of 3/12, and veteran national and West Indies off-spinner Anisa Mohammed got 2/22 as North Starblazers were restricted to 122/8 in reply.

Shabika Gajnabi led the way for North Starblazers with 42 (43 balls, one four and three sixes), and Kirbyina Alexander chipped in with 35 (30 balls, four fours).

Trident Sports Phoenix continued to pick up their pace on Sunday, getting the better of defending champions, UDECOTT North Starblazers with a convincing 6-wicket win at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba. While over at the National Cricket Center, LCB Central Sharks upset table topper, TECU Titans by 8 wickets.

Opting to field first, Phoenix restricted Starblazers to a paltry 104 at the end of their 20 overs, with leading run scorer, Rachel Vincent scoring 35 from 29 balls and Kirbyina Alexander contributing an unbeaten 34. Alice Collins 2/17 and Stephanie Ragoonath 1/14 were the pick of the Phoenix bowlers.

In reply, Phoenix stumbled a bit, losing 4 wickets to get to their target, but a steady half century from Kycia Knight saw them home with 4.5 overs to spare. Knight was not out on 55 will Rosalie Dollabaile was also not out on 19.

At NCC, the Sharks recorded their first win of the tournament thanks to a tight spin attack that restricted the Titans to just 136 at the end of their 20 overs before Felica Walters and Shemaine Campbell made light work of that total.

The Titans opted to take first strike and were superbly led by skipper Britney Cooper who played a controlled knock of 74 that came off of 50 overs. But she found herself without much support outside of of a quick fire 30 from WI all-rounder, Deandra Dottin. It got them to 136, but the Sharks bowlers were the stars of that innings, with Skipper Anisa Mohammed opting to bowl 16 overs of spin on a slow turning.

In reply, the Titans would have quickly regretted dropping their leading spin bowler, Rosemary Samaroo and were forced to bowl largely medium pace with Dottin and Shakera Selman being their opening pair. Dottin picked up one wicket for 29 runs in 3.3 overs while Selman finished without a scalp to her name. It would be one of oonly 2 wickets had in the innings as Felicia Walters (60 n.o) and Shemaine Campbell (48 n.o) made very light work of the small total to help their team to their first win in the tournament.

UDECOTT North Starblazers’ unbeaten run came to an end following a two- wicket defeat at the hands of TECU Titans as the 2018 Courts Women’s T20 Grand Slam tournament continued on Saturday at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Tarouba.

It means that the Titans now sit on top of the table, courtesy an extra point they received following their washed out match against LCB Central Sharks in the first round of the competition. Starblazers are not far behind on 4 points however. Meanwhile and the National Cricket Centre, Couva, Trident Sports Phoenix were able to record their first victory against LCB Central Sharks who are yet to win a match in the competition.

At the BLCA, Starblazers were sent in to bat first and were dismissed for 126 in 19.3 overs thanks to a destructive spell by WI all-rounder Deandra Dottin who picked up four wickets for 23 runs, while her WI teammate, Shakera Selman grabbed 2/22. Rachel Vincent continued her fine form, getting 72 out of that total, smashing 10 fours and three sixes off just 51 deliveries. Natasha McLean contributed 23 off 26 balls while the Titans did not help themselves with 16 extras.

In reply, steady contributions from Sheneta Grimmond (24), Britney Cooper (21), Shania Abdool and Selman (16 n.o) easily saw the Titans home in 19 overs. Dottin was named Player of the match.

At NCC, some pretty ordinary bowling from the LCB Central Sharks saw Phoenix record a massive 10-wicket victory against them. Opting to bat first, LCB got to 132 thanks to Shemaine Campbell (38), Felicia Walters (25) and Akaze Thompson (26 n.o). However, their bowling let them down and consistent loose balls allowed Phoenix openers, Reniece Boyce and Kycia Knight, both of whom were struggling previously in the tournament, to ease home to victory without breaking a sweat.

Boyce (73 off 58 balls) and Knight (52 off 47 balls) brought the game home for Phoenix with 2.5 overs to spare.

Natasha McLean’s unbeaten 72 helped UDECOTT North Starblazers to their second consecutive victory in as many days, keeping them on course for a possible successful title defense.

Natasha McLean drives one past Gaitri Seetahal

Coming up against LCB Sharks at the National Cricket Center, Couva, last night, Starblazers were sent in to bat and got off to a flyer immediately. The opening pair of skipper Lee-Ann Kirby and Rachel Vincent took advantage of some loose balls by the Sharks to catapult their score to well over 10 runs an over by the 4th over. The sharks pulled things back a bit by the 10th, after removing Kirby in the 6th over for 15 and Jodian Morgan before she could face a ball, but Vincent was soon joined by McLean and the two helped to take their team’s total to 155 at the end of their 20 overs. The score is the highest of the tournament thus far after they successfully chased 153 set by Trident Sports Phoenix the night before.

McLean’s unbeaten 72 came off of 47 balls, while Vincent contributed 42 off 41 balls.

In reply, Sharks lost three early wickets with Felicia Walters (5), Kamara Ragoobar (2) and Shari John (0), all falling inside the powerplay. It gave their middle order a bit too much work to do and they eventually lost by 21 runs despite fighting innings from WI wicket-keeper bat Shemaine Campbell and Jamaican, Chinelle Henry who both contributed 43 runs each. Jodian Morgan and Alice Collins were the pick of the Starblazers bowling, grabbing 2 wickets a piece.

In the other match played last night, TECU Titans recorded their first win of the tournament, beating Trident Sports Phoenix by 60 runs. Their first match against LCB Sharks was called off due to a wet outfield.

Titans skipper, Britney Cooper led from the front, smashing 76 off 43 balls before she was bowled by Stephanie Ragoonath. WI all-rounder, Deandra Dottin chipped in with a quickfire 27 from 13 balls. Karishma Ramharack was the pick of the Trident Sports Phoenix bowlers, grabbing 3/28 off 3.3 overs.

In reply, Trident Sports never looked to be in it at any point, losing wickets at regular intervals, thanks to tight bowling from Rosemary Samaroo who grabbed three wickets for just 5 runs in her four overs. Reniece Boyce scored a patient 27 off 27 deliveries for Trident Sports Phoenix bu she received no support form the other end and her side was eventually bowled out for 89 runs in 18.4 overs, to hand TECU Titans victory by a 60 run margin.

The Courts Women’s T20 Grandslam Franchise Tournament blasted off last night with action between UDECOTT Starblazers and Trident Sports Phoenix at the National Cricket Center (NCC) Couva. The other scheduled match between LCB Sharks and TECU Titans was called off however due to a wet outfield at the FCB Clarke Road Ground. Both teams will share points from that match.

Spectators who turned out to watch the match at NCC were not disappointed though as they were treated to some exciting cricket that saw scores in excess of 150. Starblazers won the toss and elected to field first in a decision that would pay off in the end as they eventually won the match by seven wickets.

Led by WI all-rounder Stacy Ann King, Phoenix struggled to get a good start, losing three wickets by the 5th over. But King and WI wicket-keeper batswoman, Reniece Boyce consolidated to steady the ship for their side. Boyce was stumped in the 14th over off the bowling of Alice Collins for 18, but King continued on to lead her side to a formidable total of 153 at the end of their 20 overs. She was not out on 78 from 61 balls.

Starblazers skipper, Lee-Ann Kirby was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 4/21 from her four over allotment.

The total seemed to be a formidable one, but T&T senior batswoman, Rachel Vincent was up to the task. Vincent smashed 83 from 63 balls to lead her team to victory with 5 balls to spare. She was named player of the match for her match winning performance.

Speaking after the game, Kirby commended her team for coming out and executing their game plan as they look to defend their title. “We just need to work hard, practice, be more relaxed and stay positive in our matches.” she said. Kirby also thanked the sponsors and fans for their support and urged more people to come out to the matches.

For her team’s part, King lamented the poor fielding she believes was responsible for their loss, but believes her team can bounce back today as her players have the potential to be match winners.

“To be selected to a franchise team you have to have something about you. The players have the potential so its a matter of all of us correcting the wrongs we did today (yesterday) and looking forward to tomorrow (today).”

Matches continue today with UDECOTT Starblazers meeting LCB Sharks at NCC, while TECU Titans will play Trident Sports Phoenix at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy. Both matches start at 7pm. Entrance is free.

Shania Abdool Thrilled about WI Call

Shania Abdool Thrilled about WI Call https://caribbeanwomensports.com/wp-content/themes/movedo/images/empty/thumbnail.jpg 150 150 CWESN CWESN https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/f74a78ce6790e48bf170ff900b1b43b5751fa24aac4f260893b82f8a5ea52b6d?s=96&d=mm&r=g July 10, 2018 July 10, 2018

At 18-years old, Shania Abdool is no stranger to cricket, but being called up to a West Indies Women training camp in her debut senior year was something she didn’t expect, even given her recent fine run of form. “It’s quite pleasing to have been called up to the WI training squad, it’s a really amazing opportunity,” said Abdool.

Shania Abdool batting during the recently held CWI T20 Blaze

Abdool had a stellar year with the bat, helping T&T to the U19 Regional title as well as her School Zone – South, to the Secondary Schools Cricket League title. She also had a standout season with her club, Players Sports Club and impressed with the bat during the CWI Women’s Regional Championships this year.

Her inclusion in the training camp therefore, is just reward for a very successful season. Twenty players are currently encamped in Antigua, with Abdool being one of three having their maiden experience. The others are Aria Fortune of Grenada and Sheneta Grimmond.

The West Indies Women are currently preparing for the first stand alone ICC Women’s World T20 Tournament which the WI will be hosting in November. A mix of new and senior players were called, with Shemaine Campbell, who had a standout CWI T20 Blaze tournament being included. Players with previous WI stints such as Natasha McClean and Chinelle Henry were also included.

Shemaine Campbell plays a shot

Speaking with CWESN, the 18-year old, Abdool who hails from Princess Town in Trinidad says she sees the call up as just another opportunity to represent her country and make her family and friends proud. And, despite her age, she believes she has what it takes to make the West Indies Women’s team, and is prepared to do the work to get there.

“My cricket is definitely going to improve and getting this opportunity makes me want to work harder to achieve my goals,” she said. Those goals include actually making the team of course and Abdool hopes that the hard work, dedication and trust in God which have gotten her this far, will be enough to get her there.

The players currently encamped in Antigua are as follows:

Merissa Aguilleira, Deandra Dottin, Kycia Knight, Hayley Matthews, Shakera Selman, Shamilia Connell, Shemaine Campbell, Shania Abdool, Sheneta Grimmond, Afy Fletcher, Chedean Nation, Shabika Gajnabi, Ariel Fortune, Chinelle Henry, Natasha McClean, Anisa Mohammed, Britney Cooper, Karishma Ramharack, Quiana Joseph, Akeira Peters

The camp which started on July 2 will conclude on July 16. The majority of the players will then travel to Trinidad and Tobago to participate in the upcoming Courts Franchise Tournament beginning on July 18.

The T20 Tournament the WI Can No Longer Afford

The T20 Tournament the WI Can No Longer Afford https://caribbeanwomensports.com/wp-content/themes/movedo/images/empty/thumbnail.jpg 150 150 CWESN CWESN https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/f74a78ce6790e48bf170ff900b1b43b5751fa24aac4f260893b82f8a5ea52b6d?s=96&d=mm&r=g July 9, 2018 July 9, 2018

A couple weeks ago; Jamaica won the Cricket West Indies T20 Blaze Tournament – big congrats to them. The defending champs, T&T finished third and Barbados finished second in what can only be described as a heart breaking and most disappointing finish to a great tournament played… up to that point.

A week later, Barbados continued their fine form, picked up bonus points in every match played and this time, their unbeaten run counted for something and they became the new Super50 Champions.

If i’m being honest though, outside of Barbados’ run up until their fifth round match, I was not at all impressed with the majority of cricket played throughout the event. It was another year of sub par team and individual performances, outside of a handful of players and not majority WI players.

West Indies teams are known to be one of the most exciting teams in T20 cricket not just because of their flair, but also because of their unpredictability. Their long term team and player form are never real indicators of their ability to show up when it really matters, and of course, T20 cricket is a funny game – anything can happen on the day.

That being said however, if I were part of the coaching staff of the West Indies Women’s cricket team, I would be just a touch bit worried following their annual T20 tournament. Of course … that could have been said at the tournament just prior to them winning the ICC Women’s T20 two years ago as well.

But contrary to the many minds blown during last years’ ICC Women’s World Cup, anyone following women’s cricket in the two years leading up to that event, would have predicted the results of the WIW, maybe not the South Africa result, but the performances were surely on the cards. And the team selection would have cemented all predictions.

A time is coming in international women’s cricket when we must, as a region, move away from hoping that we fire on the day. In fact, I believe that that time is already upon us. Our players have to begin producing consistent performances throughout the year and especially when they come down a level, like in the T20 Blaze.

Hayley Matthews top scored at the end of the competition with 167 runs from 5 matches and the leading wicket taker was a part-timer – Chedean Nation – who is selected largely as a batswoman at the international level. It should also be noted that WI skipper, Stafanie Taylor was injured in Jamaica’s fourth round encounter with T&T and thus did not bat in that innings, while she also nursed that same injury in the following match. She managed 38, but it was a patient innings lacking her usual flair, no doubt due to that injury.

Otherwise, no other WI player dominated in a tournament that is nowhere near the international standard they are accustomed to. Such is always the case, year after year, but as mentioned before, based on the developments around the world, this may no longer be acceptable. As we saw in the WWC last year, other countries are now reaping the rewards of having invested time and resources in developing the future of their teams.

Also noteworthy is the fact that the WI women have been engaged in two, month long camps this year in preparation for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. That’s two months, out of less than 6 that they were in camp. The second of those camps ended just under two weeks before the start of the T20 Blaze. It can therefore be assumed, that even if the other players were not adequately prepared, the WI players were. Yet, we did not really see any real positive result.

There were some exciting matches played, but looking at the overall team performances, much was also left to be desired.

Guyana lost two wickets chasing 50 runs against the weakest team in the tournament and the highest total of 143 came in Windward Islands match against Leeward Islands (the team that finished last and without a win).

The defending champions, T&T, were out of the competition half-way through, thanks to their late arrival to the format of cricket they were actually playing. On all accounts and comments, it seems they were preparing for the 50-over competition, up until the 4th round. Barbados lived up to their reputation of ‘only being good on paper’ yet another year (worrying considering their players make up nearly half the WIW team) and Jamaica, though champions, played very sloppy cricket in the end. Though, to their credit, drop catches, poor batting and misfielding or not, they held their nerve where Barbados could not, and such a thing is always most crucial in any final. It’s not just about how much runs you make or wickets you take.

It’s easy to look back on a tournament and sing praises and hand out congratulations without really analyzing the performances, but unless we eventually do that in a serious way, the West Indies Women will be in for some trouble moving forward.

It’s also easy to look at the performances from the perspective of individual teams, but let’s consider that if everyone doesn’t develop, then the entire region actually suffers. We need to remember that the regional tournament is where WI players are scouted and selected. In the larger scheme of things, countries are just clubs in a sense. This is the field where our international players come from, and it seems as though the field needs watering. And it gives one an indication of why the same players have been in constant rotation for years, despite mediocre performances.

The top three teams are the top three teams because they consist largely of the top players. Barbados has the most, with Deandra Dottin, Hayley Matthews, Shakera Selman, Shamilia Connell and Kycia Knight. Usually if not for an injury, Kyshona Knight is counted among them. T&T has three senior WI players in former skipper, Merissa Aguilleira, Anisa Mohammed and Britney Cooper, former WI all-rounder, Stacy-Ann King and current new comers to the team, Reniece Boyce and Felicia Walters. Jamaica has the least, with two – Stafanie Taylor and Chedean Nation.

The other regular WI players are Affy Fletcher (Windward Islands), who did not play due to injury, Akeira Peters and Quiana Joseph (Windward Islands), and Tremaine Smartt (Guyana). Shemaine Campbell who was recently dropped from the team had a fairly decent tournament with the bat and gloves. She led her team from the front in most matches.

The only solution of course is to provide each territory with more resources so that more work can be put into developing players and players can play more cricket throughout the year. This is the obvious solution, but as is always the obvious challenge, money makes this an issue.

Players also need to take more responsibility and step up when they are called, or rather put their hands up when they know their team needs them. International players should stand out, not fit in with players, many of who only play that single tournament each year. For many years, many of our international players have been seamlessly fitting in with players who do not play half the amount of cricket they do, nor at that level.

Getting quality cricket when countries only play a single, two-week tournament each year is no easy task. Some teams only prepare a month or so before the tournament.

The current strategy doesn’t seem to be improving regional cricket. And if cricket at the regional level does not improve, then the international cricket team won’t either. And this would be all well and good, if the rest of the world were not investing heavily in their women. But it is, and the WI needs to do more to keep up. Long gone are the days when we could rely solely on talent when everyone else is merging talent with technology and proper preparation. notably, after the team’s embarrassing outing at its’ last World Cup, the CWI has endeavored to make changes to its preparation process. Hopefully this is not only because the WI are hosting the event. But rather because it has rightfully acknowledged that 1 week camps before tours and limited exposure for new players cannot work anymore.

Either way, regardless of the challenges, a way forward must be found. Do we sit back and be complacent? Or honest and critical in order to get the job done?

Barbados trounce Guyana, Jamaica lose to T&T

Barbados trounce Guyana, Jamaica lose to T&T https://caribbeanwomensports.com/wp-content/themes/movedo/images/empty/thumbnail.jpg 150 150 CWESN CWESN https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/f74a78ce6790e48bf170ff900b1b43b5751fa24aac4f260893b82f8a5ea52b6d?s=96&d=mm&r=g June 17, 2018 June 17, 2018

T&T cruised past hosts, Jamaica last night in the Cricket West Indies T20 Blaze at Sabina Park, to set up a must win final match for Jamaica today. It means that the hosts must beat Barbados to win the title in a head to head. Having lost to T&T, Jamaica are second on the points table with nine points, while Barbados sit atop the points table with 12 points as they remain unbeaten.

However, if two teams are to be tied on points, as will be the case if Jamaica beats Barbados today, Jamaica will win based on a head to head as outlined by the playing conditions of the tournament. If Barbados win however, they win by having the most points at the end of the competition.

Last night at Sabina Park, Jamaican captain, Stafanie Taylor won the toss and sent T&T in to bat, but it proved to be disastrous for her side. T&T lost the in-form Britney Cooper, who was pulled out of the match at the last minute after pulling a groin muscle during the warm-up. But it was Jamaica who suffered the bigger loss when Taylor picked up an injury while fielding a ball in the 4th over. It meant that the hosts were without their leading bowler and batswoman early on.

T&T did not seem phased by the loss of Cooper though, and batted in high contrast to their previous outings, showing greater aggression throughout their innings. Lee-Ann Kirby was given the task of opening the batting with Reniece Boyce – T&T’s fourth change to their opening pair in as many matches. Boyce and Kirby got T&T off to a flyer, taking eight runs off the first over bowled by Karla Cohen and 10 off the second by Chinelle Henry. Boyce was trapped LBW for 11 in the third over and Kirby caught caught at mid-off two overs later for 16, leaving T&T at 40/2 in 4.5 overs.

Stacy-Ann King and Rachel Vincent then paired up to take T&T to their highest total of the tournament thus far of 135 for the loss of five wickets. Vincent contributed a quick fire 35 off 30 balls that included three fours and a six, while King top scored with 39.

In reply, Jamaica struggled from the get go without their skipper, with stand-in opener, Rashada Williams contributing a slow 31 off 49 balls before she was run out. Henry, who had her first batting outing for the tournament was the second highest scorer, getting to 24. But they never got anywhere near the target and eventually succumbed to T&T to lose by 43 runs and severely dent their run rate ahead of their final match against Barbados today. Anisa Mohammed was the pick of the T&T bowlers, grabbing three for 17 in her four overs.

T&T meet Windward Islands tomorrow from 6:30 pm, Jamaica time, at Sabina Park. They have no chance of defending their title, having already lost two matches, but will hope to record a victory none-the-less to at least finish third. If Jamaica losses while they win, they will finish second having beaten Jamaica.

In other matches played last night, Windward Islands recorded their second win of the tournament, getting the better of Leeward Islands by 62 runs. LI won the toss and opted to field first and WI wasted no time in piling on the runs. Openers Juliana Nero and Rachel Cyrus had 44 and 30 respectively to take WI to 143 for six at the end of their 20 overs. In reply, LI only managed 81/8 in their 20 overs.

Barbados beat Guyana by 27 runs in the second match played last night. Batting first, Barbados got to 134, thanks to an aggressive knock by Hayley Matthews who raced to 61 off 36 balls before she was out caught. Despite leaving her team on a solid foundation of 99/2 in 11.2 overs however, the remaining batters struggled and contributed just 35 more runs in the remaining 52 balls.

Guyana lost their skipper, Shemaine Campbell, early. Campbelle has led her team with the bat each time they won, but she only managed 11. Akaze Thompson (47) and Shabika Gajnabi combined in an attempt to steady the innings and see their team home, but tight bowling from Barbados prevented it. Both were not out at the end of Guyana’s 20 overs in which they lost three wickets. Guyana face Leeward Islands tomorrow from 9:30 am.

Barbados Cruise Past T&T

Barbados Cruise Past T&T https://caribbeanwomensports.com/wp-content/themes/movedo/images/empty/thumbnail.jpg 150 150 CWESN CWESN https://secure.gravatar.com/avatar/f74a78ce6790e48bf170ff900b1b43b5751fa24aac4f260893b82f8a5ea52b6d?s=96&d=mm&r=g June 15, 2018 June 15, 2018

Trinidad and Tobago Red Force Divas’ batting woes continued, as they slumped to their second consecutive loss in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Twenty20 (T20) Blaze tournament, at Sabina Park Jamaica yesterday.

The defending champions were in a must win encounter against Barbados to keep their hopes of defending their title alive, but it was not to be and the T&T team struggled with both bat and the ball in the third round of matches played. They only managed 92 for 5 in their 20 overs, which Barbados knocked off easily in 15.4 overs.

T&T skipper, Merissa Aguilleira proposed that her team, though well prepared for the tournament, have not been able to find the necessary aggression for the T20 format. “Apparently our aggression went to sleep, and we have so much patience and I think leading into the 50 overs that will be good for us, but it’s definitely not for T20. Hard luck, we were prepared, but we just couldn’t execute.”

She commended Cooper for her knock and said her team would still stay focused and hope to finish in the top three. “Britney came in in the middle and did really well, she batted well, ran well between the wickets and I think that’s exactly what we needed, some kind of aggression,” she said. “At the end of the day we want to make sure we stay close to the top of the table, we know first and second place are definitely gone, but after all, according to how the other games play off, we have a chance of staying in the top three.”

Barbados won the toss and opted to bowl first. The decision seemed to pay off, with T&T losing three quick wickets inside the first half of the innings. Shania Abdool was the first to go, caught off the bowling of Shanika Bruce for 4. Reniece Boyce followed an over later, caught and bowled by Shamilia Connell for 10 and Stacy-Ann King was the third wicket to fall early, getting caught lbw to Deandra Dottin for 2.

Cooper showed her experience though and kept the runs flowing while steadying the T&T innings and getting them to a respectable total of 92 for five at the end of their 20 overs. Her innings of 47 included five fours and came off 46 balls. She eventually fell to Connell in the penultimate over.

In reply, Barbados made very light work of the small total, racing to their target in 15.4 overs. The Bajan opening pair of Hayley Matthews and Danie Small made their intentions clear from ball one, with Matthews in particular being very aggressive. She cleared the ropes twice in the first two overs, dispatching Lee-Ann Kirby’s second ball of the innings for six, and then following it up with a four the very next ball.

Kirby’s first over would go for 15 and Aguilliera no doubt hoped that veteran WI off-spinner, Anisa Mohammed would clean up, but Mohammed soon found herself under attack as well. Mohammed’s first over went for 13, with Matthews clearing the straight back boundary while also getting a four in that over.

Matthews was eventually caught off the bowling of Shenelle Lord for 39 (23 balls), but Barbados were already more than half way home at that point. Dottin joined Small in the middle and the two kept the score ticking over effortlessly as none of the T&T bowlers beside Lord seems to have a response for their aggression. Lord was the pick of the T&T bowlers, grabbing three wickets; Matthews (39), Dottin (14) and Kycia Knight (2). She finished with figures of three for 17 off her four overs.

Speaking after the match, Barbados captain, Shakera Selman commended her team for their ability to execute in every match thus far, but acknowledged that they would not be relaxing anytime soon with Guyana and Jamaica still to come.

“I think we should be a lot more confident now, but we can’t be complacent. Guyana also defeated Trinidad easily and we know what to expect when we face Guyana. We have to play every game hard and hopefully we can improve as the tournament goes on,” said Selman.

Asked what has been the difference for Barbados this year, given that their team is largely unchanged, she said the team work and WI player contributions have been the highlight of their tournament thus far.

“This year we are really trying to work as a team and we are really asking the WI players to put their hands up. This year we are missing Kyshona (Knight) so we know someone has to double up for her. I think Hayley really put her hand up today and really put Trinidad on the back foot.”

Also in action yesterday, Jamaica brushed Leeward Islands aside to record their 3rd straight victory in the tournament and putting them on course for the title. The Leewards were bundled out for 68 in 20 overs with Eldora Sylvester top-scoring with 13. Vanessa Watts claimed 5/9 and Chadean Nation had 3/15.

Nation returned with the bat to score an unbeaten 28, with Jamaica and WI captain Stafanie Taylor hitting 19 as Jamaica responded with 70/3 in 12 overs.

In the later match that night, Windward Islands pulled off an upset against Guyana to secure their first win in the tournament. Guyana upset defending champion, T&T just two days earlier, but despite posting 121/5 at the end of their 20 overs, with skipper Shemaine Campbell again leading the way with a top score of 61, Windwards held their nerve to brig it home. Pearl Ettienne was the leading wicket taker for the Windwards, snatching 2 for 19 in her 4 overs.

In reply, Juliana Nero and Stacy-Ann Adams gave Windwards just the impetus they needed to start. In high contrast to past innings, both were very attacking and kept within range of the run rate at every point. Nero lost her opening Partner in Rachel Cyrus early, caught by wicket-keeper Campbell off the bowling of Erva Giddings, but Nero and Adams combined to give their side hope.

Nero was eventually run out for 34 with the score on 40, but Adams kept going and contributed 23 before she was bowled by Akaze Thompson. Edelyn Thurtin provided a quickfire 21 off 10 deliveries to reduce the deficit for Windwards and despite losing Quiana Joseph and Nerissa Crafton in quick succession, Carena Noel and Aria Fortune held on to bring it home with 3 balls to spare.

Scores: Trinidad and Tobago 92/4 (20 overs) (Britney Cooper 46; Shamilia Connell 2-17) lost to Barbados 93/4 (15.4 overs) (Hayley Matthews 39, Hayley Matthews 22; Shenelle Lord 3-17)

Leeward Islands 68/10 (20 overs) (Eldora Sylvester 10; Vanessa Watts 5-9) lost to Jamaica 70/3 (12 overs) Chedean Nation 28, Stafanie Taylor 19)

Guyana 121/5 (20 overs) (Shemaine Campbell 61, Akaze Thompson 20; Pearl Ettienne 2-19) lost to Windward Islands 122/8 (19.3 overs) (Juliana Nero 34, Stacy-Ann Adams 23, Edelyn Thurtin 21; Tremaine Smartt 2-26)

Trinidad and Tobago has put their 7-wicket defeat at the hands of Guyana behind them. This according to T&T skipper, Merissa Aguilleira. T&T were upset by Guyana on Tuesday, in the second round of competition in the Cricket West Indies T20 Blaze, currently being held in Jamaica. While acknowledging that her team has put itself a bit on the back foot, the West Indies wicket-keeper batswoman explained that it’s an all too familiar position that her side has gotten themselves out of before.

“After losing against Guyana yesterday, we know the position we have put ourselves in so we have no choice but to make sure and win the rest of our matches,” said Aguilleira. “For the past couple of years we have been putting ourselves in this position and sometimes it just brings out the best in us and hopefully it works just as it has in years gone by.”

Understanding that her team must now win all their remaining matches if they have any hope of defending their title, she says the goal now is to stay focused, but also enjoy their cricket. The team she says, has already regrouped, acknowledged their mistakes and is looking forward to moving on positively.

“Yes, it was really disappointing for us, but the mood in the camp is great, we came together, we sat down, we had some fun, we relaxed, we put it behind us and now it’s all about moving forward. There was nothing really to go back to the drawing board about, but just minor mistakes we made at certain points and we will be looking forward to defending our title.”

T&T won’t be in for a smooth ride though, as the Bajans, who they face from 10:30 am today, have stayed on top of their opponents in the first two rounds. While they stumbled a bit against the Windward Islands in their first match, being bowled out for 101, but returning to win by 18 runs, they dominated the Leeward Islands in a brief but exciting 10-wicket win on Tuesday.

Barbados packs an arsenal of five West Indies players, including the world no. 1 T20 all-rounder, Hayley Matthews, hard hitting, Deandra Dottin and WI opening bowlers Shakera Selman and Shamilia Connell. Speaking ahead of the match, Matthews explained that while Barbados has what it takes to overcome T&T, they also know it won’t be easy.

“We know Trinidad will be our hardest match up so far, but we also know that we have a very strong team and we are capable of beating any team in the competition,” said Matthews. “Obviously in the last two years they’ve dominated the tournament so we know that if we can get over T&T it would be a major step for us towards winning the title.”

The 20-year old said her team is confident they can win, especially coming off two wins and commended her side for the team effort they have exhibited thus far in the competition and hopes they can carry it into their remaining matches.

Also in action today are Jamaica vs Leeward Islands from 3:30 pm and Guyana vs Windward Islands. Both the Leewards and Windwards are without wins in the competition so far, while Guyana lost to Jamaica in their opening match and the hosts remain unbeaten.

India has had a strong run in One-Day Internationals and might have just qualified directly for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 had it played its three games against Pakistan in the ICC Women’s Championship and not forfeited the six points. It finished fifth on the table with 19 points and had to go through the qualifier in Sri Lanka where it went undefeated and won a thrilling final against South Africa by one wicket, off the last ball of the match, thanks to the heroics of Harmanpreet Kaur.

India will be playing under the experienced Mithali Raj who recently became the third player to lead her team in 100 ODIs.

The batting will again revolve around Raj, who is one of the most prolific run-scorers in women’s cricket and is currently ranked NO.2 in ICC rankings. Deepti Sharma has provided India with some good starts lately. With Smriti Mandhana returning from injury, and Poonam Raut and Mona Meshram doing well on their comebacks – Poonam put together a record 320-run partnership with Deepti against Ireland in the quadrangular series in South Africa – the team will have a tricky job choosing an opening pair.

Jhulan Goswami, the highest wicket-taker in ODI history, will lead the bowling attack. She will find support in Shikha Pandey with the new ball while Ekta Bisht will lead a strong spin department. They are ranked in the top 20 of ICC bowling rankings.

Jhulan Goswami, the highest wicket-taker in ODI history, will lead the bowling attack.

India has featured in eight of the 10 World Cups played so far, with the first being in 1978. Its best performance came in the 2005 edition when the side led by Raj reached the final. However, unused to the pressure of the big stage, it faltered against Australia. In 2013 at home, it crashed out in the group stage, a loss to Sri Lanka hurting it badly.

This year, she has played six innings so far and has scored a half-century in each of them. 013 runner-up will bank on the explosive talent of its batters and the all-round skills of its captain Stafanie Taylor

The West Indies became the last team to gain direct qualification for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 after India forfeited its three-match series against Pakistan. The Caribbean side, which won the ICC Women’s World T20 2016, finished fourth on the ICC Women’s Championship table with 11 wins in 21 games.

The 2013 runner-up will bank on the explosive talent of Stafanie Taylor, who finished as the second highest run-getter of the last edition with 314 runs, and the hard-hitting batting prowess of Deandra Dottin as it aims to replicate its T20I success in the 50-over game. The young Hayley Matthews too proved herself on the big stage in India last year.

The team is a mix of youth and experience with four rookies in Reniece Boyce, Quiana Joseph, Akeira Peters and Felicia Walters. Joseph, 16, the fast bowler from St Lucia, will be the youngest player at the 11th edition. Shanel Daley also returns to the side after being sidelined with injury for nearly three years.

The West Indies’ record in England, however, is not impressive. It has won just three of the 11 ODIs played in England so far since 1979. It will hope its long acclimatisation camp will help it go well prepared into the tournament.

West Indies’ best performance came in the 2013 edition, where they reaches the finals for the first time in the history of the tournament.

RECENT FORM:
The West Indies has not played any international cricket since its tour of India in November last year. It lost the ODI series 0-3, secured a 3-0 win in the T20I series. Since then, it has taken part in a five-day camp in Barbados, followed by three weeks of training and a couple of unofficial practice matches in England.

PREVIOUS WORLD CUPS:
The West Indies have featured in five World Cup campaigns so far: 1993, 1997, 2004, 2009 and 2013. Its best performance came in the 2013 edition, where it won four matches. It first lost against India by 105 runs, then bounced back in the second game by defeating Sri Lanka by 209 runs and losing the third game to England by six wickets in the group stage. In the Super Six stage, it beat both New Zealand and Australia to finish first. It was the first time it reached the final in the history of the tournament but lost to Australia by 114 runs.

Stafanie Taylor is currently ranked No. 1 in ICC Women’s All-rounder Rankings, both in ODIs and T20Is.

STAR PLAYER:
Having appeared in 98 ODIs with 3732 runs at an average of 44.42 and 114 wickets, Stafanie Taylor, the captain of West Indies, is currently ranked No. 1 in ICC Women’s All-rounder Rankings, both in ODIs and T20Is. She is also ranked No. 5 in ICC Women’s Batting Rankings and No.2 in ICC’s Women’s Bowling Rankings in the 50-over format. She was her side’s star performer in the Women’s Championship, scoring 857 runs and picking up 16 wickets. This edition of the World Cup will be her first as captain.

SQUAD:
Stafanie Taylor (capt), Merissa Aguilleira (wk), Reniece Boyce, Shamilia Connell, Shanel Daley, Deandra Dottin, Afy Fletcher, Qiana Joseph, Kyshona Knight, Hayley Matthews, Anisa Mohammed, Chedean Nation, Akeira Peters, Shakera Selman, Felicia Walters.

Aarti Singh Dabas, Head of Media Rights, Broadcast and Digital said: “This is the first time in the history of the women’s game we will be producing live coverage of all ICC Women’s World Cup fixtures. The ICC is committed to the growth of women’s cricket and the extensive coverage for viewers over the tournament is testament to that.

“This is a huge turning point and we are very excited to see the impact it can have on the sport as part of ICC’s overall strategic objective to grow women’s cricket. What has been impressive is the way broadcasters around the world, led by our global partner Star and local licensee Sky, have committed to coverage and growing the audience.”
